This isn’t my favourite volume but as a whole the story is still obviously one of the greatest stories ever written. We get plenty of great fanservice shots of Ed and the volume ends on a great cliffhanger with a baby about to be born. The volume closes during the Rush Valley storyline. It was short and actually had a meaningful emotional impact which I just felt like neither of the animes managed to deliver with this particular arc. This has always been one of my least favourite parts of the story but I actually felt that the manga ended up handling it better than either of the animes did. Then we get into a mini-arc about Alphonse having an identity crisis. It’s over before you can even really get back into the action. We get just the tail end the fight in the 5th Lab. So this volume gets caught in sort of a strange place. Can’t be helped I suppose with all the love and nostalgia fogging my brain but I’ll do my best! Which means I’m also always a little bias when I review the series as well. I’m always thrilled to jump back into this world because I love it so, so much.
